Shrimp season starts
Shrimpers note a cautious optimism heading into the new season, which starts April 19 in provisional areas. White shrimp populations have stayed above the long-term average since January, due to warm water temperatures through the winter, but shrimpers still worry the market is oversaturated with imported, farm-raised shrimp.
Crabbers succeeded in sinking a bill April 17 that would have introduced regulations on the state’s troubled blue crab fishery for the first time amid plummeting catches over the last two decades.
What to eat
Mortadella sourced from Italy was among the cured meats banned from import by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 1967-2000. Now, it's on the menu at close to a dozen Charleston restaurants.Â
Downtown Charleston restaurant Coterie has changed its menu under new executive chef Damian Sandoval, who previously cooked at Xiao Bao Biscuit and The Obstinate Daughter.Â
